It is our mission to make your important scholarship as discoverable and accessible as possible.
You may be aware that JSTOR’s Trustees approved a $4 million relief initiative in July to mitigate the financial impact of the COVID-19 crisis on our library participants. We would like to share news with you about revenue share allocations for 2020 (to be distributed in 2021).
We anticipate that the economic impact of COVID-19 will reduce revenue generated by JSTOR in 2020 but we are committing to provide a guarantee by paying you the same total revenue share distributions by title for 2020 that were paid for 2019 (inclusive of Archive and Thematic Collection revenue collected from participating institutions, JPASS and the Corporate Collection, and any other supplemental payments as applicable). We hope this guarantee will help publishers in what is an otherwise difficult and unpredictable time.
Note: If you anticipated an increased payment for a change in moving wall status or contributed new titles this year, both will be reflected in this upcoming distribution. These titles will be paid according to their moving walls.
Please reach out to us at firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any questions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What will I be receiving for my revenue sharing payment?
A: As we stated in our September message, we will be guaranteeing the same distributions for titles that were paid for 2019.
Q: Why are you making these guarantees?
A: Due to the economic impact of COVID 19 on library budgets, we expect JSTOR’s revenues to decrease in 2020 and payments overall to decrease. JSTOR’s Trustees approved a $4 million relief effort to help publishers and libraries in this time of crisis. Included in this relief effort is ensuring that publishers do not see declines in their payments for each journal.
Q: When can I expect payment?
A: We aim to send wire payments to publishers sometime by the end of the first quarter in 2021.
Q: Will I be receiving a statement?
Q: How will I be paid?
A: You will be paid in the same method you were paid for 2019 revenue sharing in 2020.
As of 8/31/20:
Due to office restrictions, we have not been able to print, sign, and send any check payments. As of this time, we do not yet know when we will be able to send out these checks.
For the fastest delivery of payment, we encourage our publishers to select wire transfers and electronic delivery.
Q: I increased my moving wall. Will my payment increase?
A: We will pay our publishers according to the moving wall as per our agreements. In some cases, this will mean payments will increase.
Q: My title was added to JSTOR in 2020. What can I expect for a payment?
A: We will pay your title based on the moving wall payment owed. For titles in the general archive revenue-sharing pool, we will look at the average payment of new titles in 2019 with similar parameters to your journal to determine any additional payment.
Q: I added / transferred a title in 2020. How will my payment be affected?
A: We will pay publishers for the journals they licensed to JSTOR in 2020.
