JSTOR requires that every open access book has a corresponding Creative Commons License. JSTOR can’t assign a Creative Common License ourselves, nor provide legal guidance on which one to choose. If you need further information please consult the Creative Commons resources, which will assist you to pick the correct license for your book(s) .
Publisher Responsibilities
- Before hosting any open access books on the JSTOR platform, JSTOR requires that publishers sign our open access rider, as this is a legal requirement for us. This is true of any gold or green OA titles, or if you have any previously for-sale titles you wish to convert to OA.
- JSTOR only accepts open access content that meets our editorial and academic criteria.
- JSTOR then requires open access metadata via either our proprietary metadata template, or ONIX 2.1 or 3.0, as long as it follows EDItEUR’s Open Access best practices for Monographs.
If you would like to credit a funding body or grant that made the creation of an OA book possible, please include that information in your metadata using the EDitEUR’s best practices document. Please note, this is not required.
Supplying Metadata
JSTOR requires book-level metadata so that not only can our system properly process your files, but also so faculty and students can find your book on the JSTOR Delivery Platform. If you are participating in the open access program and need our proprietary Open Access template, please contact content.support@ithaka.org.

JSTOR's Open Access Guideline
We do not permit publishers to sell eBooks through JSTOR if they are open on other platforms. If JSTOR determines that a book is open or free elsewhere, such as a publisher’s site, OAPEN, or DOAB, we will remove the book from sale. This only affects books that are open or free on a permanent basis and not books that have a free preview or a limited open/free-to-read period.
JSTOR is aware that publishers work with Open Access projects and do not learn that their book has been selected for Open Access until after selling it for several months. When JSTOR learns that a book is a candidate for funding through an Open Access project, we will hold the book or remove it from sale and wait to add it to JSTOR until confirmed. We kindly request that if your book is listed as part of any Open Access project that you do not send it to JSTOR as for-sale until it is confirmed your book has not been selected.
