JSTOR requires particular metadata fields for each book for hosting. Metadata is the key to having users discover your content in ordering catalogs, search results, and beyond. Please feel free to provide more metadata than the requirements below.
- General requirements: Provide metadata through either valid ONIX 3.0 or JSTOR's proprietary Excel metadata template. JSTOR only hosts books with World rights.
- Record Reference ID: Use a unique record reference ID for each title. Many publishers use the eISBN-13 as the Record Reference ID.
- File format: Clearly designate a record as either PDF or EPUB.
- Electronic ISBN-13: Use a unique eISBN-13 for each title. This must be distinct from any print ISBN-13 provided (optional).
- Book title: Include a distinctive title for each book.
- Publication date: Include a publication date with year, month, and day.
- Publisher: Include the publisher name for each book.
- BISAC subject code: Include at least one current active code from the complete BISAC Subject Headings list.
- Contributor name with contributor role: Include at least one contributor with a contributor role code.
- Language: Include a language code. JSTOR is only able to assign one language to a book.
- Price in USD (salable books only): Include a price in United States dollars. JSTOR sells books only with World rights and only in an unlimited multi-user model.
- Unpriced indicator (OA books only): Include an Unpriced Item Type 01 (ONIX) or a price of $0 (Excel) for open access books.
- OA indicator (OA books only): Clearly indicate that a book is open access.
- Creative Commons License URL (OA books only): Include one of the Creative Commons license URLs.
- JSTOR also highly recommends including accessibility details and other accessibility-related metadata for your ebooks.
